Donald
J. Mirate, MD, FACS
Dr. Mirate is a board-certified ophthalmologist (eye physician and surgeon), with experience in cataract, glaucoma, laser, oculoplastic and refractive surgery. He received Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Electrical Engineering from Union College in Schenectady, NY in 1974. He received his MD degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY in 1978, and he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia from 1979 through 1982.
Dr. Mirate is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has practiced ophthalmology in Valdosta since 1983, and has introduced many surgical advancements to the community, such as no-stitch cataract surgery, no-injection eye drop anesthesia for cataract surgery, and multifocal intraocular lens implants that reduce the need for glasses after cataract surgery.
Dr. Mirate's other interests include music, aviation, physical fitness, and
writing. He is an instrument-rated pilot, and an occasional contributor of letters
to Quality Progress, Eye Net, and Wired magazines. Dr. Mirate’s wife, the Reverend Galen Mirate, is the pastor of St. Margaret of Scotland Episcopal Church in Moultrie, Georgia, and their son Milo, is a pianist and an aspiring propulsion engineer.
